Cupping is an ancient therapy that continues to be used across many cultures. This technique has become more popular in the mainstream over the past few years especially as more athletes utilize this therapy and display their cupping marks. Of course with this new spotlight comes misconceptions as well. So here is the low down:

In my practice, glass cups with heat are used to create a suction (negative pressure) allowing the tissue to be pulled upwards into the glass. This brings stagnant blood, fluids, toxins, cellular debris up to the surface to be eliminated. Depending on the persons history and current state, discoloration can be left on the surface which will later fade. The color of the marks will vary from light pink to dark purple depending on the amount of stagnation in that area,  These marks may look painful but they are not and people usually feel a pleasant relief. After a series, little to no marks will result even though the cups are placed with the same amount of suction, same duration and in the same location. With all that congestion removed new blood, nutrients and oxygen can then properly circulate throughout the tissues. Cupping is great for:

  • Musculoskeletal pain,
  • Muscle spasms, cramps, tightness,
  • Numbness
  • Migraines
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Calming the nervous system
  • Post-injury trauma
